The origin of Moroccan Rug crafting techniques are hard to nail down as they go back thousands of years but the materials used are a clear indication that the weaving techniques of Morocco are an ancient tradition. The most common materials used are those native to Morocco that have been readily available to people across the country for centuries and usually played an integral part in their culture and lifestyle in other ways. For example, camel hair, which is very durable and warm, is a common material used in flat weave kilim rugs. This is more commonly used by Berber tribes living on the edge of the Sahara desert, since camels are still the most common form of transportation for them. Just as sheep herds are common among Berber tribes who use the animal for many purposes including food, drink and wool making it the most common material used. It is a durable, stain resistant, fire resistant, natural material that is biodegradable. A rug made from natural wool will be cherished for decades to come.
